While working as a cashier at the Montgomery, Alabama Woolworth's store during the summer of 1958, Grace Holly sees a pickpocket rob a customer inside the store. When she later meets the young man who perpetrated the crime—Wendell Bryant Tuckerman, also known as Chili Boy—she finds herself pulled into situations she never expected and will never forget
Her brief time with Chili Boy has haunted her to this very day; she cannot escape him, even with the passing of the decades since. Grace describes what happened that summer with wit, sadness and aching self-awareness that allows us to understand the difficulty of making the right choices in a world where the right choices sometimes end up hurting a little too much.
A Day at the Fair with Chili Boy edition by Andrew Wilk Literature Fiction eBooks
Looking back from old age, Grace reminisces about the summer of 1958 when she left her home in Selma, Alabama, for the big city of Montgomery. At nineteen, she sees herself as all grown up and ready to take on the world. While working at Woolworth's, she observes a pickpocket stealing a customer's wallet. She becomes a minor heroine for trying to stop the thief, but he escapes. A few days later, she sees the pickpocket on the street and pursues him with the intention of turning him in. When she finally catches up with the thief (Chili Boy), he charms her into letting him go. Thus begins Grace's summer of fascination with Chili Boy. In her naïveté, Grace wants to believe Chili Boy is a good boy who is just a bit misguided. Despite many evidences to the contrary, Grace continues to believe in Chili Boy's essential goodness.Wilk captures perfectly the time, place, and especially the voice of his main character, as well as the other characters in the book. The reader cannot help loving Grace, despite her and Chili Boy's lack of respect for the wisdom and experience of their elders. And, with Grace, we want to believe that Chili Boy will live up to her expectations. This book is an enjoyable look back on a simpler(?) time. I highly recommend it.

This book has more than just words, the author put so much thought behind it, that it challenges the reader. It is a modern, upbeat page turner. It is about doing the right thing and about a young girl following her heart. This book is a master peice!
A Day at the Fair With Chili Boy is a wonderful work of literary fiction in an era in which those who truly appreciate quality fiction find themselves starving. Mr. Wilk's story is insightful and moving, his descriptions are poetic, and his dialogue is vivid. A superbly written and thought provoking book.
A hilarious yet touching novel about the folly of youth as seen through the gentle eyes of wisdom. It explores the undeniable attraction that wickedness holds for us all, even when good sense tries to intervene. Well written and thoroughly enjoyable.
A Day at the Fair with Chili Boy stays with you long after you put it down. This is a delightful and touching coming of age story.
